Malta residents who are eligible for public-health coverage and need healthcare cover during temporary travel in the EEA or Switzerland.
What should you do?
Open the official EHIC application below.
1. Check that you are eligible. The main route is for people ordinarily resident in Malta who are covered by Malta’s social-security legislation, with other listed categories also eligible. 2. Apply online using the official EHIC application below. The card itself is free. 3. Apply early. The official guidance recommends that the application reaches the Entitlement Unit at least 15 working days before you travel. 4. A complete application is normally processed and delivered in about five working days, but postage time is why you should not leave it late. 5. The EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. Eligible cards are generally renewed automatically one month before expiry. Babies born from June 2024 onwards are issued an EHIC automatically at three months of age.
