A third-country national applying for residence in Malta on the basis of self-employment must first deal with the employment-licence requirements administered by Jobsplus.
Identità states that an application for a residence permit on the basis of self-employment should follow a request to Jobsplus for the relevant employment licence.
The current Identità fee is €100 for a first application and €100 per year for renewal. At renewal, a period of up to three years may be requested if the Jobsplus employment licence covers the same period.
A company director, shareholder or beneficial owner who performs an executive function for a registered company is not automatically treated as self-employed for this purpose. Identità states that such persons are employees of the company and normally require a Single Work Permit.
