EU citizens who are self-employed and intend to reside in Malta for more than three months must register their residence with Identità.

The applicant should ensure that the self-employment registration with Jobsplus is active. Identità’s current list also includes a recent Jobsplus employment history, VAT documentation, tax documentation and a Social Security or National Insurance certificate.

Applications are submitted through the Expatriates Unit Portal under the Self-Employment basis. Existing Maltese residence-card holders normally reuse their registration number.

Self-employed EU nationals must continue to comply with Malta’s tax and social-contribution obligations while exercising this residence basis.
